| Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are descended from Newfoundland Dogs rescued from a shipwreck in 1807 and bred with local retrievers. A Chessie can retrieve 200 ducks in a single day from freezing water. The coat of a Chessie is nearly waterproof. The Chessie is the mascot of the University of Maryland.
