Chesapeake Bay Retriever Rescue Information: The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, or Chessie, is a friendly, smart, medium sized breed. Chessies like to have their own way and can be a bit slow to obedience. Owners should be firm authority figures with experience training strong willed dogs. Chessies are wonderful with children. The Chesapeake Bay retriever is more aggressive than other retrievers, especially with other dogs, and needs to be thoroughly socialized. Chessies like to be outside and do well with a decent sized yard or some land.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Trivia: Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are descended from Newfoundland Dogs rescued from a shipwreck in 1807 and bred with local retrievers. A Chessie can retrieve 200 ducks in a single day from freezing water. The coat of a Chessie is nearly waterproof. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is the official dog of Maryland. The Chessie is the mascot of the University of Maryland.
